Face embroidery in progress

Here are the embroidery stages for the doll in my banner picture. This is one of my favourite parts of the doll process.

Honours work photoshoot

The dolls I am creating this year form a large part of my honours research. (I am currently studying at QUT within the fashion school). This weekend I did a photoshoot with everything I have made so far, which I will be printing in the form a book. This will form the bulk of my 'creative pratice outcome'.
The above sketch was an idea for how I wanted to photograph one of my dolls, which wears a matching outfit to myself. I call her the companion doll.

Hannah Doll development!!

This image shows the development of my pattern for the Hannah Doll. It has been such a long process! But I have the pattern nearly as I want it, and have developed a couple of spin-offs which I am looking forward to sharing. The dolls are about 65cm tall, and made from a tea-dyed quilters cotton, which is just that little bit softer and better quality than calico. I have a lot of fun with the hair and hand embroider their faces and use needle-sculpture and hand-embroidery on the bodies.

Material Memories: Restaging the ECHO Exhibition

In a previous post I spoke about being invited to dress a series of dolls for an exhibition at QUT Art Museum. The exhibition is now over, and here are some photographs of the finished dolls.

The dolls were from the early 1900's, the one on the left has the date 1909 pressed into her back. They are de-accessioned museum stock, which were donated to QUT by the National Trust, and I dressed the dolls in fragments of garments which were also part of the donation.
